You can't take it with you

I recently had a bit of an epiphany.  One day I am going to die and someone else, probably someone I love, is going to have to sort through all of my possessions.  The most likely outcome is that most of what I desperately hold onto now will be either thrown into the rubbish or sent to the op shop.

Around the same time I heard someone on the radio talking about losing everything they owned in a bush fire.  As they set about replenishing their rebuilt home they decided to adopt a specific philosophy.  Before buying anything she asked herself the question, "will this be useful or does this bring me joy?"

Putting those two concepts together I looked around my home and wondered how many of the things I cling onto so tightly would end up not only discarded at some stage but also no longer were of use or brought me joy.

With the thought that reducing physical clutter may help reduce the feeling of mental clutter everything came together.  I made the decision to begin a full scale cull.

So far I've sent over one thousand paperback books, twenty coffee mugs and fifteen vases to the op shop.  A good start but I think I've got a long way to go.
